After 500 BC, when the Greek historian Herodotus created the seven natural world wonders listing, others too have followed suit. In 1997, CNN too released their seven natural wonders of the world list. The listed wonders comprise of earth, water and sky related natural happenings spread across the five continents. These natural world wonders are un-comparable and leave their onlookers simply awe struck.

Grand Canyon

This was created from the wind and water erosion of Colorado River with each layer of eroded rock representing a distinct geological period of the Earth’s past.

The Harbor at Rio de Janeiro

This natural world wonder was identified first by Portugese explorers who sailed through this series of beautiful mountains and beaches during one of their sea expeditions in the year 1502. This natural world wonder occurs when the solar particles from sun collide with atmospheric gas to produce light energy near the Arctic Circle in the northern region. This light show consisting of red, blue, violet and green lights in the northern skies can be seen from many parts of the world. It is also called as Aurora borealis and is among the seven natural wonders of the world. This natural wonder can be observed in the city of Fairbanks in Alaska, the Yukon Territory in Canada, the city of Tromso in Norway or the Swedish Lapland.

Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls are created at the borders between Zambia and Zimbabwe where Zambezi river falls from the height of 420 feet. This beautiful fall, which is also the world’s largest and which has find its place among the top seven natural wonders of world, was first spotted by a Scottish missionary, David Livingstone in 1855. He named it after the queen of England. It is known as Mosi-oa-Tunya by the native Africans, which means “The Smoke that Thunders”, because this one mile wide water fall makes thunderous spray clouds as it falls.

This is the highest peak among all the other mountains of the world located at majestic Himalayas. This peak has a staggering height of around 30,000 feet from the sea level. Temperature is very cold to survive and is around 97 degrees below the freezing point. More than 150 people had already lost their lives in its expeditions though 700 other succeeded in reaching the summit. This is ranked among the top seven natural wonders of the world. On May 29th, 1953, two men reached this peak to create a history to conquer this natural world wonder for the first time in history.

The Great Barrier Reef

The Great Barrier Reef is counted as one of the major amongst the seven natural world wonders. This one is the biggest natural living observation spanning across 133,000 square miles area and located in the Coral Sea off the coast of Queensland in Australia. This can also be seen from the space. It stretches over 1,400 miles in length with an estimated 1,500 species of fish and 350 types of coral lives. This was first discovered by Lieutenant James Cook, captain of HMS Endeavour ship, on June 11th, 1770.

Paricutin Volcano

Paricutin volcano is a dormant volcano now. This one of the most famous among the seven natural wonders of the world is positioned in Mexico. It got last erupted in February 1943 when it destroyed two villages and hundreds of homes there. One can reach this natural world wonder on a horse back only and the hiking is long and strenuous to the body.
