Backpacking and sleeping wild on Dartmoor is tremendous under clear skies. A beautiful destination, the Dartmoor National Park is a great place to take your tent, touring caravan or motorhome for a great camping holiday. Camping is an enjoyable and popular way to experience the park, but it requires some preparation and research before setting off on your trip.Camping for one or two nights on the open land on Dartmoor is perfectly acceptable provided that you choose your spot sensibly and don’t pitch your tent on farmland, on moorland enclosed by walls, on flood plains or on archaeological sites. Dartmoor is the only part of England that officially permits wild camping – that is, pitching your tent wherever you like. Wild camping is oddly liberating. No toilet blocks, caravans, electricity hookups, or other campers. In the way of too much freedom and choice, however, it can also be rather confusing. Long hikes are relatively simple when you have an end goal for the night, walking from one campsite to the next.
Wild Campsites in and near Dartmoor Park
Dartmoor is popular place for camping due to wildlife destination environment. Camping and caravanning in Dartmoor National Park will place you at the heart of one of Britain’s breath taking spaces and provide you with the space to relax, imagine, unwind and, most importantly, to breath and think. The Dartmoor National Park Authority lists 23 campsites. The campsites are all privately owned and operated, and vary by location, facilities, fees and reservation requirements. Langstone Manor, for example, provides campers with toilets, showers, laundry facilities and an on-site restaurant, bar and game room. It is within walking distance of Tavistock, a small market town, and a short drive from the south Devon coast. Barley Meadow Camping and Caravan Park caters specifically to families. In addition to 60 tent sites, fire pits for hire, hot water, toilet, shower and laundry facilities, the site features baby changing facilities, a children’s wooden play trail and an on-site shop.
Camping outside of established sites in Dartmoor National Park is referred to as “wild camping.” Visitors are welcome to set up camp for a night or two on open land in Dartmoor, but there are some rules and regulations. Don’t pitch your tent on farmland, areas of moorland enclosed by walls, or within 320 feet of roads, flood plains or archaeological sites. After two nights in one spot, you must move on and find a different place to camp.

The site is an ideal base for family holidays and is only a short walk from an outdoor swimming pool, a range of pubs and restaurants, unique shops and an award winning butcher / deli.

Tavistock Club Site lies on the west side of Dartmoor National Park and enjoys fabulous views over the moor. You can leave the car behind and explore the moorland paths, lanes and rivers on foot.
